October Meeting to Highlight November Election |

Sheriff LE District - PRO Vote Yes!
We cannot grow the economy by providing safety for the citizens and businesses in Josephine County without stable funding for the sheriff's department. Sheriff Dave Daniel initiated the Josephine County Law Enforcement Service District to provide dedicated funding for county patrols, dispatch, and evidence services to prevent and investigate crime in the county area. By law, these funds cannot be used for other county programs.
The cost: $.99 per $1000 of assessed property value. Estimated revenue will stabilize current levels of operational service. There will be a citizen Advisory panel with members representing geographic locations: Sunny Valley/Wolf Creek, Greater Grants Pass, (including Colonial Valley and Merlin) Williams, and Illinois Valley. Every year, the Sheriff’s Office budget will be presented to the Citizen Advisory panel before going to the Budget Committee for approval There will be an Annual External Audit to ensure funds go to operations described.
If this measure passes, county law enforcement operations will be stabilized, preventing the loss of county patrols and trained deputies in the coming years. It’s a step toward stable funding, a safer county, and a stronger economy. Colette Storms |
| Sheriff LE District - CON Here are the reasons I urge all voters to vote no on the law enforcement taxing district. 1.We live in one of the poorest counties in Oregon. Seniors,fixed income and families struggle to make ends meet. As a candidate for State Representative, I will push for state funding for law enforcement. The State funded cannabis raids and money for homeless isn't this even more important.?
2.Pay raises, PERS, and health insurance costs will cause a reduction in staff despite what was voted on. Lawsuits against this sheriff's department have happened and more will happen. 4.The cost of expansion of the evidence room to a state-of-the-art facility isn't in accordance with a county with a limited budget 5.Increased patrol will still be ineffective in the outlying areas. 6.Further proposed taxes and fees like a fire district and a water utilities rate increase in Grants Pass must all be considered with a taxing district in a poor county.
The Democratic party must be on the side of those struggling here in our little paradise. Voting no shows compassion and makes sure government lives within its budget as we all must. Mark Seligman |

Speakers from the Grants Pass Fire Department will be joining us. We will be discussing the pros and cons of the City Levy and the Law Enforcement District that will be on the ballot in November.
Gathering will be in-person at Unitarian Universalist and via Zoom. 6:30 is Social. 7:00 is JCDCC General Meeting with speaker and business.

We will be gathering at the Two Rivers on Riverbanks Rd for some wine, food, music, good conversation and the beautiful outdoors in the valley between the Applegate and Rogue Rivers. Wine prices vary by the year/type. Sara always has some food available via a food truck. There will be live music by Rachael Sandeen from 2-4pm.
We will gather starting at 2. Look for the group with a donkey toy nearby. |

In Need of Active Volunteers

The good news: Colette Storms (our Chair) and Michael Storms (our Treasurer) will soon become grandparents. They want to help and spend as much time as possible with their grandchild. Catch is they live in another state. The bad news, probably in December, we will be electing a new Chair and a new Treasurer to complete Colette and Michael's terms. There is someone who has thrown their hat into the ring for Treasurer. But Chair remains open at this time. Interested?
Also, we need volunteers to help with campaigns, newsletter, and expanding our active membership. All of these are personal growth opportunities with support from current members. Perhaps you know of someone. Bring them to the next meeting (Tuesday). See what we have to offer. |
