Local Democrats Support Public Safety |
Josephine County Democrats, at their October meeting, voted to support public safety in Grants Pass and Josephine County. Democrats believe the City of Grants Pass’s Measure 17-114, a five-year levy renewal, and Josephine County’s Measure 17-115, calling for the formation of a Law Enforcement District, are crucial to the well-being and development of our community.
Democratic Party PCPs don’t give their support lightly. Party voting takes place after the Measures have been thoroughly explained, research is done and published in our newsletter and speakers are invited to talk about the issues. Support means we have looked at the pros and cons and decided the pros win. This isn’t the same as an endorsement, which means we would actively campaign and spend money to promote the measures. There are already non-partisan committees doing this.
The city levy, at $1.79 per thousand dollars of assessed value, is inadequate but if it doesn’t pass city police and firefighters will not only suffer drastic cuts in their departments but lose morale as well. The levy is thought of as a kind report card and voting against it is like giving an “F” to all those out there working double-time to keep fires under control and neighborhoods safe. And the City Council, trying to come up with a way to fund police and fire beyond what the levy covers, will have to ask the citizens to dig even deeper in their pockets just to maintain minimum services. Democrats realize if citizens don’t step up and support their police and fire services adequately, we will cease to be a functional community.
The Citizen Coalition for Safety in the county is asking voters to form a district with a permanent tax rate of 99 cents per thousand that would stabilize the sheriff’s department. This district does not include Grants Pass and its areas of urban influence. If you pay taxes for city services you won’t be asked to support the sheriff’s department. Josephine County is at a point where its citizens must face the consequences of having the lowest property tax rate in the state and start paying for their own sheriff’s department instead of depending on diminishing outside sources of funding. Democrats believe this is the responsible thing to do.
Both measures will be on the November 7, 2023 ballot. If you aren’t registered to vote go to oregonvotes.gov. Voter registration deadline is Oct. 17. Ballots will be mailed Oct. 18. VOTE!! |

In Need of Active Volunteers
|
|
|
The good news: Colette Storms (our Chair) and Michael Storms (our Treasurer) will soon become grandparents. They want to help and spend as much time as possible with their grandchild. Catch is they live in another state. The bad news, probably in December, we will be electing a new Chair and a new Treasurer to complete Colette and Michael's terms. There is someone who has thrown their hat into the ring for Treasurer. But Chair remains open at this time. Interested?
Also, we need volunteers to help with campaigns, newsletter, and expanding our active membership. All of these are personal growth opportunities with support from current members. Perhaps you know of someone. Bring them to the next meeting (Tuesday). See what we have to offer. |
