Commissioners Update Weeks of 6/28 and July 7

Commissioners are desperate to come up with a plan to finance the sheriff’s department voters in Josephine County, who have a long and proud record of rejecting taxes, will accept. If they don’t find a new funding source, the sheriff’s department, by the fiscal year 2023, will be reduced to little more than a couple of animal control officers funded by a levy and the illegal cannabis eradication team, funded by state money. The county could get more of the federal bailout funds sent to make up for the lack of timber receipts when logging ended on federal lands but those have been dwindling for years in expectation counties would eventually become self-sufficient and our Commissioners would rather complain about our Democratic Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley than actually approach them about the county’s dilemma
